Seat is still putting the finishing touches to the Tarraco ahead of first customer deliveries in early 2019. However, insiders have told us that it’s already very nearly the finished article.
The Tarraco engine line-up will kick off with a 148bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol (badged 1.5 TSI 150). It’s likely to be the best-selling engine in the UK and we’d be surprised if it weren’t the one to go for; it’s plenty gutsy enough from 2000rpm, so hauls the car along briskly without you needing to thrash it.
That’s a good thing, because the engine does start to sound a little strained when the revs rise beyond 4000rpm.
A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, along with front-wheel drive, although an auto ’box and four-wheel drive will be available.
Other engines will include a brace of 2.0-litre diesels: one with 148bhp and the other with 187bhp. We’ve driven the latter, which is likely to come exclusively with four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox – the form in which we tried it. There’s noticeably more low-rev shove compared with the petrol and outright acceleration is better, too. Not by enough to justify its likely much higher price tag, though.
Seat wouldn’t allow us to photograph the interior fully undisguised, but we managed to get a sneak peek at most of the dashboard and it seems very reminiscent of the one in the smaller Ateca.
All versions will come with sliding and reclining second-row seats, with enough room for the heads and knees of adults well over six feet tall.
The Seat Tarraco is shaping up to be a worthy challenger to the class-leading Peugeot 5008.
